Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Patch Unleashes the Cold Wrath of Garraka
The Firehouse Gets Frosty With New Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Patch, Plus My Ghostly Hopefuls for the Winter DLC
Break out the red Paranormal Parkas, switch on your bronze-plated proton packs, and get ready to take on fear itself in the new Ghostbusters: Spiris Unleashed update. Following the successful release of Frozen Empire, IllFonic launched Patch 1.8.0 for its popular spectral asymmetrical multiplayer title.Â
The free new patch, available now for download, is chock full of quality-of-life improvements, but the real draw is the Frozen Empire cosmetics, shells, and Overlord variant. First introduced with the arrival of Samhain in October 2023, Overlords present a unique challenge for busters wanting to put their skills and builds to the test.
Patch 1.8.0. summons Garraka to Galway Station as a new Bounty. Busters can team up with their new Modern Age Particle Throwers to bring down Frozen Empire's big bad. It won't be an easy fight, as tall, dark, and horny comes prepared with a host of icy powers sure to leave some 'Busters out in the cold.Â
Blending the Old with the New
Garraka may have your P.K.E. meter spiking, but he's not the only ghastly presence devastating New York. Samhain, the pumpkin-headed Ghost of Halloween, is back as a replayable challenge. Initially limited to the 2023 Halloween season, IllFonic listened to the most ambitious of 'Busters and summoned the pesky paranormal presence once more.
Additionally, the patch carries over many aesthetics from Frozen Empire, including:
Frozen Suit Tint
Lightning Suit Tint
Repossessed Shirt Logo
Frozen Neon Shirt Logo
Melody Diner Shirt Logo
GB Engineering Shirt Logo
Robotics Shirt Logo
Garraka Shirt Logo
IllFonic also implemented a list of quality-of-life improvements, which can be found here in the official patch notes.
The Season of Slimer
The patch came just a day after the Spirits Unleashed developer revealed its Year 2 2024 roadmap of free DLC, surely a surprise for the many who keep claiming the "game is dead." While some details on the roadmap are vague, such as the special ghost reveal coming this winter, IllFonic did reveal that Summer is the Season of Slimer.Â
The next patch after this spring Frozen Empire update will focus on everyone's favorite lean green eating machine. To celebrate the franchise's 40th anniversary, Spirits Unleashed will introduce three Slimer variant skins based on his appearance in Frozen Empire, The Real Ghostbusters, and Ghostbusters (1984).Â
Those not up on their Slimer lore may question what that means, but we Ghostheads know to expect even more of Onionhead's voluptuous rear.Â
Friends of Yours?
Along with Slimer and a mysterious new ghost reveal, the roadmap had a curious silhouette that Ghostbusters 2 fans immediately recognized as the Scoleri brothers. Conspicuously placed under the autumn update, which touts a haunting at the S.C.Y. County Courthouse, the silhouette promises a new pair of bounties to tackle when the third-quarter DLC drops.Â
While I've been reciting all manner of ancient texts in hopes of summoning the Scoleri brothers as a playable ghost, for now, it looks like they'll just be part of a special bounty. Which leaves the winter specter reveal as a complete mystery. IllFonic states it's a "fan-favorite ghost," which isn't too helpful when you consider it could be a reference to any of the dozens of specters from the movies, comics, or cartoons.
The infamous New York Public Library Ghost, Eleanor Twitty, is maybe the most logical option. Still, we're not writing off classics like The Real Ghostbusters’ Fearsome Flush, the big-headed Boogieman, or even the grotesque Peoplebusters. Idulnas from IDW's comic series is a possibility, too, considering he was adapted into the Ghostbusters board game.
While it will be a long wait for that reveal, there is plenty to keep Spirits Unleashed players entertained. From new cosmetics to a year's worth of Twitch drops, like Slimer when left to his own devices, we're definitely eating well.
