From Ghosts to Klowns, IllFonic Joins Development of 'Killer Klowns from Outer Space' Game
It's time to take a ride on the nightmare merry-go-round
A familiar face is sending in the Klowns. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed and Predator: Hunting Grounds developer IllFonic announced today it will be publishing and co-developing Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game.
Known for its asymmetrical multiplayer titles and appreciation of 1980s cinema, IllFonic aims to bring the same care and respect shown to Ghostbusters and Predator to the 3v7 multiplayer game based on Charles and Stephen Chiodo’s 1988 science fiction horror comedy.
“When we first started talking to Good Shepherd Entertainment and Teravision Games about this possibility we were very excited about the IP,” IllFonic CEO and Co-Founder Charles Brungardt explains. “[W]e are thrilled to help create another experience for the community that they can truly immerse themselves in.”
Killer Klowns was first revealed a little over a year ago during the Gamescom 2022 opening night presentation. Before IllFonic’s involvement, the game was being developed by Bogota-based developer Teravision Games (Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks from Outer Space).
The involvement of a veteran developer in the asymmetrical space should ease some concerns players may have had with Teravision alone at the helm. Killer Klowns from Outer Space is shaping up to be a sizable venture, with an extensive post-launch roadmap already discussed. Though Teravision has been around since 2006, its titles have consisted of a mobile game, several reskins, and outsourced work for games like Space Chimp (DS) and inXile Entertainment’s Clockwork Revolution.
Killer Klowns pits players against one another in 3v7 matches, with three of the titular murderous Klowns hunting seven Crescent Cove residents. The Klowns have five unique classes and bring otherworldly weapons and abilities to Crescent Cove, including Shorty’s Cotton Candy C4 launcher, Chubby’s Cotton Candy Ground Punch, and Rudy’s Popcorn Mines. Invisible cars, balloon-animal dogs, a deadly Jack in the Box, and so much more round out an eccentric assortment of gadgets and creatures used to sniff out the humans and harvest the sleepy town.
The Klowns won’t have it easy, though, as residents can wield their own weapons and tools to combat the Barnum and Bailey threat. Human players will need to work together and strategize, using whatever they can find in Crescent Cove to repel the alien threat. Even with a four-person advantage, it’s vital not to underestimate the trio of horrifying Klowns.
The announcement comes shortly after IllFonic dropped an ecto trap’s worth of new content on its latest asymmetrical multiplayer title, Spirits Unleashed. Though the development team may be split between the two titles, it’s unlikely that Spirits Unleashed will lose support. In fact, the Ecto Edition for the Switch was only just announced in June and currently doesn’t have an official release date.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game is releasing on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. There’s currently no set release date,
